Human Dimensions of Environmental Systems

Seminar

The Working Seminar series is a forum for UIUC scholars working in the area of the human dimensions of the environment to share on-going work.

Students and guests become acquainted with a broad array of the latest methodologies, approaches, and theoretical and empirical developments in environmental scholarship.

Presenters benefit from obtaining feedback on work-in-progress in a supportive, multidisciplinary setting prior to formal submission.

We are working on an archive of previous presentations.

The Human Place in Nature.
New HDES Course Offers Students a Unique Opportunity.

In Spring 2010, HDES is pleased  to offer a unique course entitled “The Human Place in Nature.” This course will be led by Professor Eric Freyfogle, the Max L. Rowe Professor of Law, and will involve renown faculty from across campus. This is a unique opportunity and may not be repeated. There are no prerequisites for this class. Interested students should register for HDES 595B (CRN 53589).

Description: This section of HDES 595, open to all graduate students, will examine the largest issues relating to our environmental predicament, drawing upon diverse, provocative readings and transcending disciplinary perspectives. It will consider overall normative standards (sustainability, its critics, alternatives), will explore the root causes of ecological degradation, will consider the proper and improper roles of science and the market, will look at mechanisms for environmental change, will consider environmental justice (broadly defined), and will probe the status (moral and ecological) of nonhuman life. For most of the semester (10 weeks) the class will attend a campus-wide series of 2-hour sessions, in Gregory Hall (room 213), led by Prof. Freyfogle with involvement by many other faculty. These sessions are a central part of campus-wide efforts to elevate understandings of issues related to sustainability. More information about the course can be obtained directly from Prof. Freyfogle at efreyfog@illinois.edu.
